Neighborhood Projects

There are many ways to help keep our neighborhood the beautiful, safe and friendly place we all love. Here are some ways you can participate, and who to contact. People who don't have email addresses can be reached through the story phone directory.

Volunteer Committees
The following committees have been formed to advance our neighborhood and to allow you to have a voice in the future of the area you call home. Get in touch with the chairpeople listed below to get involved.

If you have a pet that could stray, register it with the Pet Pal. If you lose your pet and someone finds it in the neighborhood, they can call the Pet Pal and you and your pet will be more quickly reunited. To register your pet, to report lost pets or to report found pets, call Pat Ten Eyck or register online. For more pet news, check out our Furry Friends page.

Trash Talk
The time between put-out and collection of uncontained trash has been reduced to one week from the original two. Please be aware that it is a violation of city ordinance to put it out before the specified times. See the calendar link (below or left) for dates. For more info, visit the City's website.

It's tempting to put unneeded household items in the alley to be picked up by whoever. What happens, however, is that transients often are attracted to the alleys and use discarded furniture for sleeping, defecating behind and setting on fire. They also rummage through the trash bins, strewing rotting garbage all over the alley. Some enterprising dumpster divers pillage the recycling bins, looking for aluminum cans. While this does supply them with an income, it also jeopardizes the City's recycling program, as the cans are the only recycling that turns a profit for the City. it makes more sense to donate these items to non-profits that can benefit from our throwaway society. Be aware, though, that there are some things that even they won't take, so ask yourself if you would give the item to a friend. if so, it will qualify as a good donation. There is a group called Desert Shaman that picks up discards to take into Mexico. They may take things that the more "upscale" non-profits would reject. You can find out more info by email. What to do with the other stuff? Wait till one week before uncontained pickup to put it out in the alley.

For more info on garbage, recycling and the environment, see the Cleanup website.
